INTRODUCTION

An understanding of database tools and technologies is key to many of today’s industries. Database systems are predominant in the world of IT, and continue to demand more complex data structures and interface, as applications get increasingly sophisticated.

Databases provide the infrastructure to many organisations, and they offer support to key business applications and information systems. The most common database model used commercially is the relational one.

The aim of this unit is to provide a knowledge and understanding of database systems including design principles, practical implementation and development skills for both the system designer and software engineer. The importance of structured query languages should be stressed, in terms of how they can be used to manipulate data and how they are used for a variety of tasks including querying and report writing.

On completion of this unit the learner should be able to understand, design, query and implement a database(s). HAMMER LTD. is a well established auction company. HAMMER LTD. has Auction Houses in different cities all over the country.

You are asked by the HAMMER ltd general manager to design and develop a database solution system for HAMMER ltd.

The HAMMER LTD. has sales departments, the owner department, the finance department, the viewing department and the administration department.

A short description of the business is as follows:

From each Auction House the potential buyers receive catalogues with items for sale. Each Auction House deals with selling items from different categories: paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, musical instruments, houses, cars and others. Some of them are stored at different locations in the warehouses of the company’s Auction Houses. Some of the items for auction are too big to be stores in a warehouse (houses, cars, etc) so they are stores at the present owner’s address. Owners can be private or companies (for example the British Airport would sell the unclaimed lost properties, the Police Force would sell confiscated goods, etc) The client can make an appointment with an Auction House to view a particular item. On the auction day clients can be physically present to bid on the desired item or they can bid via phone. Some items have a “buy it now” option and they can be purchased after an item is viewed. Each auctioneer is working in an Auction House and has recorded details like name, address, date of birth, gender, salary, and is identified by the national insurance number (NIN). Any item for auction is handled by only one auctioneer. The starting asking price, the final price and shipping costs are stored for each item.

You will be the System Analyst of the application, but you should always think about the opportunities to develop further so you will create a Design manual for future reference. Developer might not be the person using the application so an Instruction manual also is necessary.
